An Indian high court has asked the Maharashtra government to issue notice to the social networking site.
Thursday, October 12, 2006: New Delhi: This happens with every social network, and Orkut is just another example. After having its hands stained in Brazil, Orkut is now facing some legal challenges in India. A petition has been filed in the Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court alledging that Google's social network is spreading anti-India sentiments.
According to media sources, a PIL (public interest litigation) has been filed by Yugant R. Marlapalle against Orkut that the social network site spreads anti-national messages under communities like `We hate India'. He accuses that there is no monitoring on the site as there is an image of a burning Indian flag displayed on the community.
Recently, some individuals started an e-mail campaign against such communities by sending out e-mails that they must report this community to Orkut so that it is banned. Now, the matter has been taken to court.
There is no official statement from Orkut, but it is expected that Google may take some action against the issue.
Recently, Orkut was in trouble in Brazil regarding child pornography and other illegal activities. Brazil's public attorney had filed a suit against Google demanding information on users of its social networking site, Orkut. Google had complied with some of the public attorney's requests and had handed over information to the authorities.
