As the debate over banning Orkut rages on after recent controversial remarks posted on the website, TIMES NOW analyses if the self regulation mechanism on the website actually works. For one, there's a report abuse option.
Orkut's self regulation mechanism
Does it work?
'Report Abuse' - This button empowers Orkut users to report content for review to the review committee.
What users say: Good idea, but highly ineffective. Composition of the review committee is unknown and active action on abuse reports does not always reflect on the website.
'Ban Users' - This function is a tool with the community owners to delete posts or topics or ban any user on the community.
What users say: This function does not essentially prevent anyone from starting a 'Hate Community'.
'Priority Report Tool' - This is a tool to be used by the Police to directly notify the Google authorities for faster action.
What users say: There are no reported instances of successful use of the same by the authorities in India.
TIMES NOW has been bringing you the latest on the government-Google standoff. Google has reacted to the government's decision to monitor Orkut with defiance, saying it will not block out the social networking website.
