SAO PAULO -- Brazilian prosecutors on Wednesday said they filed a motion with federal judges to let police investigate allegations of illegal activity on U.S.-based Google Inc.'s (GOOG) social-networking site.

In a statement Wednesday, the Sao Paulo-based prosecutors said Google's Brazilian management has "refused to turn over information about abusive groups" using Google's Orkut social-networking site.

The prosecutors said they have identified 22 separate groups using the Orkut service that have violated Brazilian laws against child pornography, racism and political extremism.

Google spokesmen had no comment on the prosecutors' motion, according to Brazilian news services. In previous statements to authorities on the issue, lawyers for Google's Brazilian managers have said that the content of the Orkut service is held at Google's headquarters in California and that Brazilian managers have no access to such content.
